• Newborn Deaths in the United States Resulting From Sudden Unexpected Postnatal Collapse (SUPC)
• Approaches to Avoid Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) with a Focus on Keeping Newborns Safe in Hospitals and at Home
Objectives:
• Compare the characteristics observed in newborn deaths secondary to sudden unexpected postnatal collapse (SUPC) including those in the subset of sudden unexpected early neonatal death (SUEND) to the characteristics found in the postperinatal age group experiencing sudden unexpected infant death (SUID)
• Describe organizational recommendations supporting breastfeeding, supine sleeping position, and skin-to-skin contact for newborns and include the guidelines and standards outlining appropriate monitoring for these activities during the hospital stay
• Summarize the preventive steps and approaches identified for reducing risks of SUID with focus on the timing of most deaths and on developing programs that are inclusive and equitable for all races/ethnicities
