Vitamin D and Calcium During Pregnancy

Vitamin D and Calcium During Pregnancy is organized by Dietitian Central.
Live Event Date: Apr 29, 2021
Expiration Date: May 31, 2024
Description:
Maternal nutrient status plays a key role in reducing obstetric complications, prevention of birth defects, and healthy pregnancy outcome. Vitamin D and calcium are among the key nutrients to focus during pregnancy because, in case of the first one, a deficiency is widespread, and, in case of the other, more than adequate intake has been associated with a lower risk of some adverse pregnancy complications. In this lecture, I will summarize research finding in terms of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency prevalence. I will review research data regarding the role these nutrients play during pregnancy/fetal development. I will also discuss available data on what constitute adequate dose if/when supplements are used, along with whether one form of supplements is better than the other.
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
• Gain background information on vitamin D, including forms, recommended intake, prevalence of deficiency, metabolism, and criteria of deficiency status.
• Understand findings from studies regarding associations between vitamin D and calcium intake and status with adverse obstetric health conditions.
• Discuss what constitute adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium and how such intake can be achieved.
