Goal:
The safety of medications during pregnancy and lactation depend on multiple factors including the physiological changes associated with pregnancy; specific factors related to the chemical structure of the drug; and pregnancy stage at the time of exposure. This activity will explore those factors as well as discuss the toxic effects of certain drugs and drugs to avoid during lactation.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants should be better able to:
• IDENTIFY the physiological changes during pregnancy that alter how a woman’s body responds to drugs
• LIST the factors affecting drug exposure to a fetus and a breastfeeding infant
• RECOGNIZE strategies to reduce drug exposure to a breastfeeding infant
• SPECIFY the labeling requirements that were put into effect as a result of the Pregnancy and Lactation Labelling Rule
