As dietitians, we must be aware of intolerances, food allergies, digestive diseases, and other conditions that impose necessary limits on dietary intake. Did you know that medically necessary restrictions can increase the risk of disordered eating (DE)? Not only do Registered Dietitians need to have knowledge of how to treat various cases and make appropriate nutritional recommendations, but it is also crucial to screen for DE and counsel clients in a way that helps prevent the development of eating disorders (ED).
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
- Identify medical conditions that impose necessary dietary restrictions, like food allergies, digestive diseases, & diabetes mellitus.
- Understand how medically necessary dietary restrictions can lead to DE/ED attitudes & behaviors.
- Screen clients with certain medical conditions for DE/ED attitudes & behaviors.
- Learn skills used in providing nutrition counseling for medical dietary restrictions in order to prevent and/or treat DE/ED.
- Apply learned principles to case study examples.
