Live Event Date: Mar 02, 2021
Expiration Date: Mar 02, 2024
Overview:
Gestational Diabetes (GDM) is the most common medical complication of pregnancy. GDM is defined as high blood sugars that were recognized for the first time during pregnancy. Consistent evidence has demonstrated that proper management is associated with improved outcomes for mother and baby in both short and long term. Given that lifestyle modification is the first line for treatment it is essential for dietitians to stay up to date regarding dietary patterns that have been associated with improved glycemia. In this course we will review risk factors, diagnostic criteria and target ranges for blood glucose in women with GDM. Also we will identify complications associated with hyperglycemia and recommended medication management. Furthermore we will discuss the latest research on the effect of carbohydrates including types and amounts on glycemia.
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
• Discuss modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for GDM.
• Explain diagnostic criteria, blood sugar goals and consequences of hyperglycemia on maternal and fetal health.
• Review role of medical interventions including insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents.
• Understand current research regarding nutrition specifically types and amounts of carbohydrates in the management of GDM.
