Clinically Relevant Pathology of the Placenta - Part I (Jun 08, 2021 - Jun 07, 2024)

Clinically Relevant Pathology of the Placenta - Part I is organized by Opus Medicus, Inc.
Course Dates:
Last Review Date: 08-Jun-2021
Expiration Date: 07-Jun-2024
Description:
Inadequate experience in diagnosing pathologic changes in the placenta can lead to confusing and imprecise reports, unnecessary maternal testing and concern, and even inappropriate intervention such as anticoagulation in the mother or antibiotic prophylaxis on the baby.
This two part course illustrates common histologic abnormalities of the placenta with clinical correlates. Suggestions for diagnostic terminology and specific clinical follow-up are provided.
This part I presents basic findings on placental examination that can corroborate, but cannot by themselves serve as complete clinical diagnoses. Part II builds upon the material in Part I and covers findings that add significant value to explain fetal complications and predict recurrence.
Objectives:
• Present common microscopic abnormalities of the placenta, grouped by clinical indication for the examination.
• Offer guidelines for diagnosis and reporting of common placental abnormalities.
• Present, in parallel, mimics of clinically important diagnoses.
Topics:
• Placenta previa
• Increta/percreta
• Acute abruption
• Uterine atony (hemorrhage)
• Twin-twin transfusion
• Implantation site
• Chronic abruption
• Diagnostic reporting format
