Course Description:
This 1-hour seminar will examine the diaphragm in critical care. Neurological compromise, traumatic injury, and congenital defects will be presented. A detailed examination of the phrenic nerve and the neurological compromises of the diaphragm is given. Numerous acquired defects of the diaphragm and their treatments are reviewed in detail. Understanding how the diaphragm will adapt to prolonged ventilation (VIDD) and the consequences that result is examined. There are reviews of various current studies regarding early mobilization in the ICU for the prevention and treatment of Intensive Care Unit Acquired Weakness.
Educational Objectives:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the anatomical structure of the diaphragm including innervation and blood supply.
• List four causes that may damage the innervation to the diaphragm and affect normal function.
• Describe the factors involved in Intensive Care Unit Acquired Weakness.
• Be able to describe the pros and cons of early mobilization in the ICU.
