Course Description:
Epilepsy is a common neurological condition characterized by recurring seizures. Several etiologies have been hypothesized, each based on a different combination of genetic, structural, metabolic, or unknown variables. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most important neuroimaging modalities for establishing an epilepsy diagnosis and determining probable causes. The existence and location of structural abnormalities, as well as the suitability of patients for surgical care, can all be captured by MRI. The use of MRI early in the treatment of epilepsy patients, as well as during follow-up, is recommended by current clinical standards. New technological advancements, combined with innovations in sequencing methodologies and postprocessing algorithms, have considerably improved MRI's performance in a range of clinical scenarios. Although this emerging body of research needs to be validated in well-controlled clinical studies, the provocative findings have already changed our understanding and perception of epilepsy and the most effective ways to evaluate and treat it.
