As a result of participation in this activity, participants should be able to:
• Recognize the importance of understanding emotional dysregulation and its appropriate management in the treatment of substance use disorders.
• Differentiate the most common causes of emotional dysregulation in substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
• Explain the essential characteristics of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and how it can be used to develop distress tolerance, emotional regulation and core mindfulness.
• Determine the appropriateness of behavioral therapies for dysregulated persons with SUD.
• Identify the various skills that can be adapted for substance use disorder treatment, including radical acceptance and developing a “wise mind” approach to understanding and solving problems.
