Course Description:
Gout accounts for a substantial and growing impact on healthcare costs, functional disability, and health-related quality of life, while severe and refractory gout contributes disproportionately to the overall burden of the disease. This program will address the pathophysiology of gout, particularly in relation to chronic kidney disease. Treatments and management strategies for gout in general and gout that has progressed to severe or refractory stages will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand the pathophysiology of gout and why gout may progress to the severe and refractory state
• Describe best-practice diagnostic approaches for severe and refractory gout in the setting of CKD
• Evaluate the best individualized treatment strategy for severe and refractory gout that promotes adherence, safety, and optimal outcomes in CKD
