Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States, with an estimated 19.4 million adults (2019) having experienced at least one major depressive episode (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: The National Institutes of Health (NIH), 2022). According to American Psychiatric Association (APA), routine depression screening of adults remains very low (2016). This course evaluates the barriers in screening patients for depression, examines the role of primary care in depression screening, and analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of depression.
Learning Objectives:
• Describe the epidemiological landscape of patients at risk for depression – including the gap in care
• Evaluate the barriers for screening patients for depression in primary care
• Examine the role of primary care in depression screening
• Analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of and risk factors for depression
