With Giardia, swallowing as few as 10 oocysts (the infectious form) can cause an infection. Fecal accidents are not uncommon in pools. Even in the absence of accidents, a swimmer may have up to 0.14 g of feces present in his/her gluteal fold (butt crack). This amount can climb as high as 10 g among young children.,Learning Objectives:,After taking this course, you should be able to:,• Discuss two common parasites generally responsible for diarrheal illnesses associated with swimming pools and water parks.,• Explain why it is more difficult to eradicate Cryptosporidium than Giardia from swimming pools.,• Discuss the common bacteria responsible for the skin rash associated with hot tubs/spas and swimming pools.,• Explain at least three recommendations from the CDC to help decrease recreational water illnesses.
