Influenza severity in children can range from uncomplicated self-limited illness to severe disease and death. High influenza infection rates in the pediatric population contribute to the spread of the virus in the wider community. Because immunization is the most effective means of prevention, clinicians must have robust knowledge regarding available influenza vaccines, differences among them, and data supporting their use. In this CE activity, expert clinicians will compare influenza vaccines based on their efficacy, dosage and administration, and indications in children. Faculty will summarize differences between influenza vaccine technologies, review real-world efficacy findings, and discuss strategies to improve pediatric vaccination rates.
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
• Incorporate the use of influenza vaccines into practice based on their efficacy, technology, dosage and administration, and application in the pediatric population.
• Summarize the differences among egg-based inactivated, cell culture–based inactivated, and live-attenuated influenza vaccines.
• Apply real-world clinical findings into practice regarding the efficacy of pediatric influenza vaccines and how vaccination rates can be improved.
