Activity Description:
Craig Shapiro, MD has been a member of the Department of Infectious Diseases at NCH since March of 2018. He is the Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in the Delaware Valley and is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Shapiro graduated from Colgate University and SUNY Downstate Medical College. Dr. Shapiro completed his residency training at the Children’s Medical Center at George Washington University and his Fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Disease at Emory University School of Medicine. Before coming to Nemours, Dr. Shapiro was an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Emory University. He is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is subboarded in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Shapiro is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, where he is an active member of the Committee for Antimicrobial Stewardship. Dr. Shapiro’s current research involves applying quality improvement practices to develop better efficiency in antibiotic ordering and diagnostic testing for infections. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Shapiro and his colleagues have developed a set of guidelines for the treatment of children with Covid-19. As a result of this activity, participants will be able to understand and describe pharmacologic treatment options for patients with Covid-19. This program was captured at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware on October 28, 2022.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:
• Describe the options for pharmacological management of inpatients and outpatients with Covid19 disease.
• Identify patients who may benefit from SARS CoV-2 pre-exposure prophylaxis with EVUSHELD (tixagevimab/cligavimab.)
• Understand the need for more pediatric clinical trials data to help develop specific guidance on use of Covid-19 therapeutics in children.
