The 2021 CDC guidelines for PrEP outline the importance of selecting an optimal regimen as well as the need to provide education, adherence counseling, and monitoring of individuals taking PrEP. Three PrEP options are currently available, and most recently, an injectable formulation has become available. Investigational PrEP agents include additional injectable therapies, topical gels, vaginal rings and films, subdermal implants, patches, and inserts. Each of these methods has unique efficacy and safety considerations as well as administration and monitoring parameters that need to be understood to individualize and optimize care.
