Michigan Public Health Institute: Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Race, Ethnicity, Ancestry Language Training for Healthcare Staff is organized by Central Michigan University (CMU) College of Medicine and will be held from Jan 31, 2022 - Jan 31, 2025.,,Course Description: ,Collecting race, ethnicity, ancestry, and language (REAL), sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), and religious, spiritual, and cultural data is critical to tracking, identifying, and reducing disparities in quality of care and improving patient/provider interactions and overall service delivery within health care systems. To successfully integrate this data collection into systems, it is critical to both understand how this data is linked to improved outcomes along with best practices to collect the information using equitable and culturally responsive approaches. To support successful integration and implementation, the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI) Center for Health Equity Practice (CHEP) will offer professional development workshops to support capacity building efforts within organizations, to address both the why and the how regarding REAL, SOGI, and religious, spiritual, and cultural data collection efforts.,,Learning Objectives:,• Explain the root causes of health inequities.,• Describe how intersecting social identities interact with systems and health outcomes.,• Define levels of oppression (individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural/systemic, cultural) as they relate to health outcomes.,• Understand the importance of collecting and using SOGI/REAL data in the healthcare context.,• Identify methods to collect SOGI/REAL data in an equitable, affirming, and culturally responsive way.,• Learn the relevance of collecting SOGI/REAL data to addressing and reducing health disparities.,• Identify strategies for responding to patients who have questions about collecting SOGI/REAL data.,,Additional details will be posted as soon as information is available.
