This presentation will address the topic of racism and health, with a focus on Black American populations across the lifespan. I will highlight several biopsychosocial pathways linking racism, mental health, and health from prior research and discuss necessary changes to improve health and promote health equity among Black Americans.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
• Identify at least 3 recent societal trends and events that have contributed to an interest in a renewed interest in racism and health.
• Describe at least 3 mechanisms by which racism impacts the mental and physical health of Black Americans.
• Identify 3 assessment and intervention strategies or approaches that could enhance outcomes for Black Americans experiencing racism and poor mental and physical health.
