Part of the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies program, this topic module contains two units:
• Assessment and Interventions for Stress and Mental Illness | Liana Leonov, MD, MPH, FACLM, FACPM, DipABLM
• Healthy Lifestyle Interventions and Positive Psychology | Liana Leonov, MD, MPH, FACLM, FACPM, DipABLM
Part one of this module discusses the relationship between emotional distress and poor health and introduces screening tools for stress, depression, and anxiety. The provider's role in facilitating patients’ emotional wellness and the indications for referral to mental health professionals are also reviewed. The unit reviews depression as a comorbidity for diabetes and coronary artery disease and summarizes key management/treatment approaches for depression and anxiety in patients with comorbidities.
The second unit covers how healthy lifestyle elements, such as physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and sleep promote emotional wellness, and discusses emotional wellness self-management and the role of positive psychology in lifestyle medicine.
