Description:
This one-day practical skills workshop will focus on what dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills are and how occupational therapists can best position themselves to teach them. The following DBT skills will be explored to assist clients in accepting and changing: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance. Lecture, self-reflection, case studies, and hands-on practice opportunities will be utilized to assist you in furthering your skills and confidence so you can apply them in practice to promote the occupational participation of individuals and collectives.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
• Describe dialectical behavior therapy.
• Utilize at least three mindfulness exercises with individuals and collectives.
• Teach at least three interpersonal effectiveness skills to individuals and collectives.
• Support individuals and collectives in recognizing their emotions and the physical impact of emotions.
• Describe the body’s response to trauma.
• Teach at least five distress tolerance strategies to individuals and collectives.
