Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)is a serious life-threatening disorder that must be recognized early for effective medical intervention. Yet many clinicians and pathologists have limited experience recognizing the symptoms and signs of HLH. A review of the salient features and types of HLH is needed for physicians to improve recognition and intervention in this disorder, and the outcome of patients presenting with HLH. This course reviews the historical recognition, clinical features, and key laboratory abnormalities to enable early identification and timely treatment of this often fatal disorder
Objectives:
To review historical recognition, clinical types, clinical features, laboratory abnormalities, and bone marrow biopsy findings in patients with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
Topics:
The course will cover genetic basis, pathophysiology, classification, clinical presentation, pathologic and laboratory diagnosis, and basics of treatment of HLH. Historical aspects will also be covered.
