Course Description:
The curriculum for Module 2 continues the objective of advancing knowledge in renal nutrition for dietitians and other interested healthcare workers across the Globe. With Module 2, the GRID program takes learners through the ADIME (Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, and Monitoring/Evaluation) steps related to patient-centered nutritional management of kidney disease while not neglecting such management issues as interdisciplinary care, patient education, and patient empowerment. Furthermore, other topics for discussion that broaden the scope and depth of dietetic practice such as research translation are addressed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:
- Describe the KDOQI guideline development process.
- Interpret the guideline recommendations and supporting evidence related to nutrition assessment methods, protein and energy intake, nutrition supplementation, electrolytes, micronutrients, and medical nutrition therapy in patients with CKD.
- Compare the differences between the 2000 and 2020 nutrition guidelines.
- Discuss implementation strategies for best clinical practices.
- Explore professional and practice competencies in nephrology nutrition at the competent, proficient, and expert levels.
- Develop an individualized professional development plan using the nephrology nutrition SOP/SOPP.
- Understand the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and how Medical Nutrition Therapy fits into the process.
- Discuss the 4 steps of the NCP - ADIME [Assessment, Diagnosis, Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation].
- Understand the misconceptions of nutritional screening tools (NST) in low-to-middle-income countries.
- Distinguish the concept of various NSTs.
- Comprehend the importance of NSTs.
- Review the role of anthropometric measurements in the nutritional assessment of adults with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in relation to practice.
- Identify the techniques of body composition measurement in adults with CKD and their value in nutrition assessment.

- Identify the steps involved in the nutrition assessment of patients with chronic kidney disease.

- Understand how to provide individuals with CKD recommendations on how to incorporate more physical activity and exercise into their lives.
- Describe the key elements of best practice for designing diet sheets & patient education materials (PEMs).
- List three tools that can be used to help evaluate PEMs.
