Description:
Perfusion computed tomography (CT) is a timely, simple, and cost-effective means to quantify hemodynamic conditions in microscopic blood vessels. The information generated by perfusion CT maps has proven to be beneficial in clinical decision-making, particularly in acute triage settings, in which the rapid and accurate characterization of patients’ cerebrovascular health status is essential. The approach is now a preferred neuroimaging mode in a number of clinical situations, including primary cerebral-perfusion disorders, such as ischemic stroke, but also in head trauma and brain cancer. Recent advances in technology have improved the resolution and coverage of perfusion CT maps while reducing radiation exposure. However, issues surrounding standardization and reproducibility remain to be addressed.
