This intermediate lecture will provide a brief overview of common anxiety and depressive disorders seen in various medical settings, will discuss an evidence-based approach to treatment for these disorders, will review medications commonly used to treat these disorders, and will provide an update on medications relatively newer to the market that can be considered for use as well.,,Objectives:,• Summarize first-line medication treatments for anxiety and depression,• Discuss newer medications used to treat anxiety and depression,• Choose a medication treatment for anxiety and/or depression was given a clinical scenario,• Explain to patients and colleagues why sedatives (e.g. benzodiazepines) are a suboptimal treatment for anxiety disorders
