Overview:
This intermediate lecture will cover diagnostic criteria for neurocognitive disorders versus normal aging; common causes of neurodegeneration in older adults and how neuropsychological testing can be used to identify these varied etiologies; and review case examples of patients who have known or suspected neurocognitive disorders.
Objectives:
• Define mild cognitive impairment and dementia (i.e. mild and major neurocognitive disorders) and discuss differences between these conditions compared to normal aging.
• Briefly describe pathophysiology of common neurodegenerative diseases.
• Identify subtypes of dementia and how cognitive testing data can assist with quantifying cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues and differential diagnosis.
• Discuss examples of neuropsychological testing data in patients with known or suspected dementia or MCI.
