Adolescent Substance Use is organized by RnCeus Interactive.,,Expiration Date: Oct 26, 2023,,Description:,Drug experimentation typically begins around twelve to fourteen years of age and becomes increasingly prevalent up into the twenties. By the time they are seniors in high school, almost 70% have tried alcohol, 40% smoked cigarettes, and 20% have used a prescription medication for a non-medical purpose (Johnston, O’Malley, Bachman, and Schulenberg, 2013). More than half of adolescents have tried an illegal drug, usually cannabis and about 20% become fairly regular recreational users.,Parents may believe they have insulated their child from cultural and social influences they mistakenly associate with substance misuse (i.e., low-income families, affluent families, single-parent families, genetic traits, etc.).,Today, teens are influenced by peers, music, television, movies, video games, school, digital media, and family influences. Adolescent drug use occurs in affluent and low-income neighborhoods, single and two-parent households, among athletes and non-athletes. The takeaway message for parents is, a teen's attitude toward drug use can be influenced by positive protective factors as well as the negative risk factors,,Learner Outcomes:,Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:,• Recognize the factors that make the topic of substance use so emotionally intense.,• Recognize common behavioral signs of substance use.,• Explain screening tools and brief interventions for adolescents.,• Identify the effects of popular street drugs today.,• Recognize the problems of poly drug use in youth.,• Explain the relationship between mental illness and drug use.,• Describe risk-taking as a developmental task.,• Differentiate a temporary drug-related psychosis from a true psychosis.,• Understand the possible consequences of failure to illicit information about drug use.,• Explain the effects of drug/substance use on the developing brain.
