Depression is a major cause of disability in the U.S. and worldwide. There is a spectrum of effective treatment options – drug and non-drug – that can be employed to help patients. Treatment methods are often mixed and complimentary to each other, with the goal of achieving remission, not simply symptom reduction, for each patient. This presentation addresses the most common pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches for treating depression.
Course Objectives:
• Identify general pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities for depression.
• Differentiate among the pharmacologic classes used for drug therapy of depression.
• Summarize mechanisms, as they are currently understood, that drug and non-drug therapies for depression employ.
• Identify complimentary treatments that a patient may be provided, with the goal of remission of depression.
