Description:
With over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) per year, identifying a medication with demonstrated efficacy could save tens of thousands of lives annually. This Journal Club evaluates the data behind sodium nitrite for use in reperfusion following ischemia due to cardiac arrest.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this application-based course, participants should be able to:
• Explain the mechanism of action of sodium nitrite.
• Describe the significance of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and its incidence in the United States.
• Discuss the statistical findings of the SNOCAT trial and the current clinical significance of using sodium nitrite for the treatment of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
• Apply the results of the SNOCAT trial to a patient case.
