Prior to initiating any form of tooth bleaching or whitening, a proper examination should be performed to render a proper diagnosis of the cause of discoloration. This diagnosis guides the treatment times, techniques, and materials so that the patient is satisfied with their results, and has realistic expectations for what bleaching can do as well as whether other treatments are needed in addition to or instead of bleaching to achieve the smile they desire.
