Then, when you know better, do better.” In integrating the language of inclusivity and providing strength-based affirming therapy, knowing better requires introspection, humility, reflection, self-awareness, fearlessness in risking mistakes and may feel like stepping into uncharted unfamiliar waters. The newness and its impact, however, teaches that there is so much more to learn and so much more to give to those we serve – giving in a new way that enables unifying vulnerability, affirmation and acceptance. New language and terminology have emanated from societal awareness and outcry, and legal and political challenges — requiring our cognitive flexibility, rethinking, research, unlearning, letting go of old-ways and adapting to new ways, the redefining of therapeutic relationships and integrating changes to our practice standards, scope of practice and code of ethics. Change, the essence of our work as speech-language pathologists, yields moments just like this, moments we live for, if true learning is to be life-long.
