Increasing age and female sex are significant risk factors for developing osteoporosis. Through pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, pharmacists can be integral in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and its related fractures. This panel discussion will center on updates to the 2020 AACE/ACE guidelines for osteoporosis, as well as advances in treatment options and the role of pharmacists in supporting screening recommendations for patients to identify fracture risk. Indications, dosing, and clinical trial information for select available and emerging oral and parenteral therapies for osteoporosis will be discussed. Expert panelists will share tips to improve communication with patients about the initiation of therapy and counseling points to educate patients on the importance of maintaining a bone-healthy lifestyle and preventing the development of fractures related to osteoporosis.
