The treatment of MS presents many challenges, and there are no medications yet that can fully prevent or reverse symptoms. As research into disease-modifying therapies continues to progress, pharmacists will be essential in navigating the adverse effects, costs, and utilization of resources associated with emerging therapies. The pharmacist’s role in establishing MS treatment pathways to limit delays and decrease risk of disease progression using disease-modifying therapies will be discussed. Opportunities for managed care pharmacists to intervene in the care of patients with MS in selecting and managing treatment will also be outlined.
