Learning Objectives:
By the completion of this course, the nurse will be able to:

• Describe the purpose of medications used for the ventilated patient, including paralytics and sedatives
• Identify weaning criteria for patients and demonstrate an understanding of when it is appropriate for the care team to adjust ventilator settings
• Identify and mitigate barriers to extubating patients with a complex course of intubation / advanced airway
• Interpret lab values relevant to ventilator weaning and describe the steps towards successful discontinuation of mechanical ventilation
• Describe the role of the nurse in the interdisciplinary process of weaning patients from mechanical ventilation
