Part of the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies program, this topic module focuses on Sleep Health and contains two units:
• Sleep Physiology, Behavior, and Assessment | Csilla Veress, ND, LAc
• Circadian Physiology and Sleep Health | Csilla Veress, ND, LAc
Sleep health is a relatively new field of study in the realm of lifestyle medicine, and therefore the scientific literature regarding sleep health is limited. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the key concerns associated with improper sleep habits and how best to incorporate a sleep health component into your clinical practice. It will discuss sleep physiology, the physical and behavioral conditions that are impacted by sleep patterns, and how changes in lifestyle related to sleep can have a profound impact on your patients. This activity will help increase your knowledge regarding sleep health and provide a basis for providing this important component of lifestyle medicine to your patients.
Learning Objectives
After viewing the module presentations, learners should be able to:
Sleep Physiology, Behavior, and Assessment
• Recognize sleep’s role in physical health, relating to metabolic health, cardiovascular health, and immune function
• Recognize sleep’s role in mental and emotional health and in behavioral dysfunction
• Assess key factors that differentiate patient subpopulations with insufficient or poor-quality sleep
• Analyze specific sleep pattern diagnostics for proper practice management
• Identify lifestyle-based activity, dietary, environmental, and coping behaviors that can improve sleep health
Circadian Physiology and Sleep Health
• Integrate circadian system components and physiology into sleep health
• Demonstrate the role of light exposure and endogenous melatonin in sleep health
• Recommend lifestyle adjustments related to light exposure that support improved sleep
• Recommend lifestyle adjustments related to meal composition and timing that support improved sleep
• Compare and employ specific treatment options for sleep disturbances
