Goal:
This activity is intended to provide pharmacists with an evidence-based update on pharmacotherapy for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia in the ambulatory care setting.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
• Explain recommendations from the 2018 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (ACC)/Multisociety cholesterol guideline for the initial treatment of patients with hypercholesterolemia
• Apply recommendations from the 2022 ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway on nonstatin therapy and the 2021 ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway on hypertriglyceridemia for the management of dyslipidemia in the ambulatory care setting
• Describe the evidence supporting efficacy of the newer medications (bempedoic acid, evinacumab, and inclisiran) and their role in the management of hypercholesterolemia
• Explain safety concerns regarding the use of prescription omega-3 fatty acid medications, statin underutilization, and statin intolerance
• Create evidence-based pharmacotherapy treatment regimens for ambulatory patients who present with dyslipidemia
