State-based efforts to improve access to hormonal contraception through pharmacist prescribing are growing. July's Journal Club examines published data comparing outcomes with prescription origination, making the case for pharmacist prescribing.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this application-based course, pharmacists and pharmacy students should be able to:
• Recognize opportunities for, and potential benefits of, expansion of patient access to hormonal contraception through direct pharmacist prescribing
• Recall key components of the United States Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use which guide prescribing of hormonal contraceptives
• Describe the design and results of a cohort study evaluating pharmacist versus clinician-prescribed hormonal contraception
• Assess strengths and limitations of a cohort study evaluating pharmacist versus clinician-prescribed hormonal contraception
• Determine the potential outcomes of pharmacist-prescribed hormonal contraception based on a cohort study
