More than 50% of oral cancer cases are diagnosed after they have spread. Nearly 35,310 new oral cavity and pharynx cancer cases will be diagnosed and more than 7,590 will die in the US in 2008 (The American Cancer Society). This course reflects some of the most current research and findings regarding oral cancer. This course will equip oral health care providers with the knowledge to help reduce the morbidity and mortality of oral cancer through preventive activities such as early detection and risk factor modification.
Objectives:
At the end of this course the dentist will:
• Recognize and diagnose oral precancerous and cancerous lesions
• Understand the significance of red, white and other oral lesions
• Recognize indicators requiring a biopsy and the various biopsy techniques available to them
• Gain an overall understanding of prevention and early detection for oral cancer
• Better understand the dental team`s role in educating patients of the dangers of tobacco and develop interventions for their patients
