Overview
The purpose of this educational activity is to enhance clinician knowledge in the ever-changing area of complications associated with Neonatology as well as promising new techniques and interventions for improving outcomes in this arena. This presentation will address when and how to utilize neuromonitoring and neuroimaging in the management of neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) undergoing hypothermia. In addition, utilization and interpretation of neuromonitoring and neuroimaging in neonates with HIE undergoing hypothermia will be reviewed.
ACCME Objectives
• Describe the pathophysiology of HIE and how neuromonitoring and neuroimaging may change during the evolution of the pathophysiology following hypoxic-ischemic injury.
• Discuss neuromonitoring devices used at the bedside of neonates with HIE undergoing hypothermia, such as the aEEG and cerebral oximetry, and have a basic level of knowledge for interpreting MRIs.
• Identify future goals for neuromonitoring and neuroimaging of neonates with HIE undergoing hypothermia.
