The presence of mercury in the food chain from environmental pollution is the most significant pathway for mercury exposure throughout the U.S. and the entire world. Methyl mercury can cause serious morbidities, particularly in children. It is important for healthcare providers to offer informed counseling about the risks of eating fish, the safety of vaccines, and handling small mercury exposures in the home.
Goal and Learning Outcomes :
The goal of this course is to increase awareness for healthcare professionals of the risks of methyl mercury poisoning and the methods to assess for risk.
After taking this course, you should be able to:
• Recognize the risks of methyl mercury and state at least five signs and symptoms of methyl mercury poisoning.
• List two ways to assess for exposure to mercury and three prevention strategies.
• Identify two treatments for methyl mercury poisoning.
