Description:
There are two types of mentoring: natural or informal mentoring and planned or formal mentoring. Natural mentoring occurs through friendship, collegiality, teaching, coaching, and counseling. In contrast, planned mentoring occurs through structured programs in which mentors or team leaders and participants are selected and matched through formal processes. This course will introduce the planned or formal mentoring. Without mentoring, nurses may not feel supported and, as a result, they may not become fully engaged in their units, consequently becoming disillusioned with their profession. Nurses who have been mentored have generally found their nursing experience to be positive and worthwhile, and ultimately go on to mentor others. This course covers the characteristics of a mentor and the differences between the role of mentor and the role of preceptor - help bridge the gap between didactic information and early clinical experience.
Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Define mentoring and its relevance.
• Understand differences between precepting and mentoring.
• Examine the role of the mentor and apply the principles to a mentoring program.
• Identify how mentoring helps to bridge the gap between didactic information and early clinical experience.
• Discuss how mentoring helps develop critical thinking skills.
