Keep Up! Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is organized by American Pharmacists Association (APhA).,,Available Until: 12/20/2023,,Activity Preview:,Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the world but is projected to become the 3rd leading cause in 2020 due to continued exposure to COPD risk factors and the aging of the population. Moreover, COPD is a leading cause of hospitalizations and increased antimicrobial use due to exacerbations. Pharmacotherapy can reduce COPD symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of COPD exacerbations, and improve exercise tolerance. Recently published evidence suggests that most patients with COPD receive pharmacotherapeutic regimens that are less than optimal and/or use them in a less than optimal manner. Pharmacists are in a unique position to advise patients regarding available treatment options and how to use inhalers and other medications in an appropriate manner. Pharmacists can also ensure patients with COPD receive appropriate immunizations and, for those who smoke, to assist to become smoke-free.,,Learning Objectives:,At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:,• Classify a patient into a GOLD category based on symptoms and exacerbation history.,• Select an initial treatment plan for COPD based on the patient’s GOLD category.,• Identify patients for whom escalating therapy to include ICS would be appropriate.,• List risk factors that increase the likelihood of a patient experiencing adverse effects associated with long-term ICS use and when de-escalation of ICS would be appropriate,,Note:,• Special Member Pricing: Get the first 6 modules of the Keep Up!
