Identifying and Addressing Challenges in the Management and Treatment of Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction: Focusing on the Role of the Pharmacist is organized by Pharmacy Times Continuing Education (PTCE).,Release date: June 20, 2022,Expiration date: June 20, 2023,Description:,Despite evolving treatments for heart failure, it remains a significant public health problem. Patients with heart failure can experience chronic and debilitating complications affecting renal and metabolic functions, which contributes to hospitalizations and reduces patient quality of life. It is important for pharmacists to be aware of the complications associated with heart failure, especially for patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). HFpEF presents with signs and symptoms of HF, but normal or near-normal left ventricular ejection fraction. Treatment strategies for HFpEF are often limited to diuretics, and management remains focused on treating associated conditions and relieving symptoms. This activity will review updated indications for available agents as well as specific agents under investigation for HFpEF to support treatment selection. Considerations for pharmacists assisting with transitions of care for patients with HFpEF will also be discussed, with a focus on guideline-recommended strategies and management of potential drug interactions and monitoring adherence.,Educational Objectives:,At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:,• Explain the incidence, pathophysiology, risk factors, and clinical presentation associated with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and how it differs from heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).,• Examine the clinical efficacy and safety data associated with agents recommended for the treatment of HFpEF as well as agents under investigation.,Identify the role of the pharmacist in the treatment of HFpEF and in patient education.
