Course Description:
Cold conditions are a common challenge faced in the wilderness. While many people assume subzero temperatures are required for a cold illness to occur, there are many factors that increase the risk of cold illness in climates as warm as 10°C. In this module, you will learn the different mechanisms by which the body loses heat, understand the pathology, treatment, and evacuation criteria of hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold-related injuries, and describe the methods available to prevent cold illness and injury.
Objectives:
The purpose of this module is to help you develop a process that will allow you to overcome obstacles and provide the patient(s) with the appropriate care.
Upon completion, students should be familiar with:
• Understand the mechanisms by which the body loses and gains heat
• Recognize and diagnose hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold-related injuries
• Understand the principles of wilderness treatment for cold injuries
• Learn about the prevention of these conditions when exposed to cold weather.
