Description:
This immersive, experiential course provides participants with the opportunity to experience the challenges of executive leadership and strategic decision-making in a realistic exercise that effectively emulates the full breadth and complexity of organizational decision-making in a complex, competitive marketplace.
Using the curriculum from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, participants will work in teams of six to seven members, acting as the executive leadership of a hospital participating in a multi-hospital market. As hospital executives, they will be required to analyze the position of their institution and to make all decisions central to the successful management of the hospital, including such elements as service line mix, capacity, investment in quality (professional/clinical, systems, etc.), patient/payer mix, marketing, staffing, financial structure, and more. The program also includes a section that equips leaders with strategies to respond to a crisis such as preventing supply chain disruptions, managing lost revenue, and addressing the mental health stressors experienced by frontline workers.
During this two-day, intensive, complex experiential learning experience participants will utilize a unique team-based simulation supported by group/team work sessions, readings, lecture/discussions and presentations. All participants are expected to take an active role in each session, as the level of class participation will have a major effect on the quality of the course.
Learning Objectives:
• Utilizing a comprehensive strategic framework, analyze complex external economic and competitive factors, internal capabilities and capacities and resource allocations and utilization options from an executive or general management point of view.
• Distinguish between leadership and management functions in supporting innovative thinking by communicating, securing commitment to and implementing organizational strategies.
• Develop and use clear organizational mission and values as the basis for identifying, evaluating, and choosing strategic options.
• Define appropriate metrics for monitoring and assessing organizational performance to ensure consistency with mission and values and to guide strategic resource allocation decisions.
• Execute strategies successfully within realistic economic, market and temporal parameters within clearly articulated values and ethical standards.
• Work effectively within a team in bringing multiple perspectives and diverse skills together to produce innovation solutions to complex situations.
• Make, support and communicate clearly strategic decisions from an executive leadership perspective.
