Goal:
This activity will discuss the federal laws established to promote the safe use of restricted medications including the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 and the Ryan Haight Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act of 2008. The Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) federal program established between the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and drug manufacturers will also be described.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants should be better able to:
• LIST the requirements governing the sale of products containing ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine as stipulated by the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005
• SPECIFY the daily and monthly sales limits on products containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine
• INDICATE the provisions of the Ryan Haight Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act of 2008
• LIST the components of a REMS program and the requirements for registered prescribers, pharmacies, and patients
