Course Description:
Musculoskeletal injuries are one of the most commonly encountered accidents in outdoor recreation and wilderness settings. It is important that a first responder be confident in evaluating and treating any injury to an extremity.
Objectives:
The purpose of this module is to help you develop a process that will allow you to overcome obstacles and provide the patient(s) with the appropriate care.
Upon completion, students should be able to:
• Properly use the medical terms of sprain, dislocation, open fracture, and closed fracture
• Be able to properly manage dislocation, strains, and sprains
• Recognize signs and symptoms of simple and open fractures
• Understand and demonstrate proper splinting techniques
• Describe when, and how, you would realign and splint fractures in the wilderness setting
• Identify and treat life-threatening musculoskeletal injuries
