When blood sugar levels drop below 70 mg/dL, patients can develop symptoms of hypoglycemia, which can include shakiness and dizziness, or loss of consciousness and can be life threatening in more severe cases. Pharmacists have important roles in educating patients about identification, risk factors, and management of severe hypoglycemia to promote hypoglycemia awareness among patients with and without diabetes. This activity will review the pathophysiology, causes, and classifications of hypoglycemia. Recent updates to the American Diabetes Association guidelines related to hypoglycemia treatment and the use of different glucagon formulations in the emergency treatment of hypoglycemia will also be discussed.,Educational Objectives:,At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:,• Review current American Diabetes Association guidelines related to hypoglycemia treatment,• Discuss the new and emerging formulations of glucagon, including administration, safety, and efficacy of these therapies,• Recognize the role of the pharmacist in patient counseling, preventing clinically significant hypoglycemia, and promoting appropriate use of glucagon in severe hypoglycemia
