Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of these activities, participants should be able to:
• Discuss issues related to equity in healthcare using shared terms and definitions
• Describe the concept of implicit bias and explain how it can impact the care received by patients
• Reflect on the concepts presented in the activity and identify areas for further exploration using resources recommended by the instructor
• Identify ways to talk about race openly with patients, especially patients of color
• Identify distinct ways they can learn more about patients from BIPOC communities
• Identify individual choices that will co-create positive change within their sphere of influence to increase patient-provider interactions with BIPOC communities
• Explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the mental health of patients
• Discuss disparities and barriers surrounding mental health care that were exacerbated by the pandemic
• Discuss new and creative solutions that can be applied to your everyday practice
• Define social determinants of health (SDOH)
• Discuss the effects of SDOH on population health
• Apply SDOH to clinical practice encounters and medical decision-making Recognize the relationship between SDOH and health outcomes
• Create tools on how to create psychological safety for patients and providers
• Identify practical takeaways on building a culture of empathy, inclusion, and feedback
