Dietary Interventions for Type 2 Diabetes Remission
Dietary Interventions for Type 2 Diabetes Remission is organized by American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) and will be held from Jul 01, 2022 - Jul 01, 2025.
Description
This session will highlight the new, and first, multidisciplinary Expert Consensus Statement (ECS) developed by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) on Dietary Interventions to Treat Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) in Adults with a Goal of Remission. The objective of the ECS is to help clinicians achieve remission of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults using diet as a primary intervention, by providing evidence-informed statements agreed upon by experts from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE), American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American College of Cardiology (ACC), American Heart Association (AHA), Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), and the Endocrine Society (ES). Using a valid and trustworthy process, which included iterative Delphi surveys, the panel reached a consensus on 68 statements related to definitions, diet as a primary intervention for the remission of T2D, dietary specifics, adjuvant interventions, monitoring therapy, weight loss, payment, and policy. Clinicians can use these statements to improve the quality of care, inform policy and protocols, and identify areas of uncertainty.
Learning Objectives
• Describe the process for creating a valid and trustworthy expert consensus statement
• Define remission for T2D in adults based on minimum time and glycemic measures
• Discuss how to apply the expert consensus statements in practice to achieve remission in many adults with T2D by using diet as a primary intervention
• Discuss the implications of the ECS for clinical practice, future research, and health policy
