Overview:
This course provides a comprehensive look at anger children, their behaviors and how to best confront and deal effectively with the anger. Students will study and gain deeper understandings of the concepts and theories related to child anger and the behaviors of the explosive child. Models for accurate assessment are examined. Students will examine models of treatment management that will highly increase their skill levels and knowledge related to working with angry children. Students will examine methods for coaching parents to work with angry children at home. Conventional behavioral management treat models are explored in-depth. Models of motivation in working with children are examined as well. Contact hours of continuing education = 45. Course Code: AM 510.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Explain why there is a difference between assigning diagnoses and helping people understand their challenges and what to do about them
• List the common characteristics of explosive children
• Define the important first step in changing an explosive child’s maladaptive behavior
• List the three crucial skill areas lacking in explosive children

• Describe the Four Cs of Parenting as they relate to the angry child
• Refute common clichés about why a specific child acts explosively
• Identify effective models of treatment for working with angry children
• Identify lagging skills
• Describe the role of the parent in a home with an explosive child
• List the characteristic components of a conventional behavioral management program
• List alternatives to reward and punishment programs
• Understand how to utilize a collaborative problem solving model
• Equate a child’s saying “I don’t care” with “I don’t know”
• Take a child’s concerns seriously
• Identify and describe an internal model of motivation
• Explain the significance of non-attachment in interactions with explosive children
• Assist children in taking into account the concerns of others
• Recognize the conditions when medication might be appropriate
• Understand how to relate to a divers range of communicators

• Assist parents of angry children in identifying and dealing with their own stressors
