Crystal Arthropathies

Crystal arthropathies such as gout and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (CPPD) are among the more common rheumatological disorders encountered in the primary care setting. Early recognition and treatment can help prevent future attacks, pain, and joint destruction and even minimize cardiovascular risk in select patients. This CME activity covers essential clinical aspects including the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate follow-up when encountering crystal arthropathies in the primary care setting.
Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
1. Distinguish the clinical presentations and manifestations of gout and associated medical comorbidities.
2. Prescribe treatment for patients with gout according to recent recommendations and guidelines.
3. Distinguish the clinical presentations, manifestations, and treatment of calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease.
The estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour.
